High Commission of Sri Lanka in Islamabad Facilitates Successful Medical Evacuation of a Sri Lankan National at Sea

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Islamabad successfully coordinated with relevant authorities to facilitate a humanitarian medical evacuation involving Sea Marshal Rohan Jayasinghe, a former senior sailor of the Sri Lanka Navy and an employee of a leading private Maritime company in Sri Lanka, who became critically ill while deployed aboard a vessel in the South Arabia Sea, approximately 800 nautical miles off Karachi.

Following the medical emergency, the High Commission worked closely with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Karachi, the Pakistan Navy, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Colombo, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure timely assistance. As a result of these coordinated efforts, a humanitarian medical evacuation was successfully conducted.

With the prompt support of the Pakistan Navy, Sea Marshal Jayasinghe was transferred to Karachi Port on 27 January after a five-day passage, during which continuous onboard medical treatment was administered. He subsequently received further care at a hospital in Karachi and, after three days of treatment, was transferred safely to Colombo in good medical condition.

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Islamabad extends its profound appreciation to the Pakistan Navy for its timely response and the deployment of a naval vessel for the evacuation, the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy for effective coordination and support, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centers in Colombo and Karachi, the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Karachi, and all relevant parties for their cooperation and assistance throughout the operation.

The collective professionalism, close coordination, and humanitarian commitment demonstrated by all parties involved were instrumental in ensuring the successful recovery and safe transfer of Sea Marshal Roshan Jayasinghe. This operation underscores the strong cooperation between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, particularly in the areas of maritime safety, humanitarian assistance, and mutual support.
