The Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture of Pakistan, Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, held a cordial and constructive meeting with Ven. Polpitimukalane Pannasiri Thero, a prominent Buddhist monk visiting from Sri Lanka, on 30 April 2026. The discussions focused on further strengthening religious and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, reflecting the longstanding historical and spiritual connections between the two nations.
The meeting was attended by the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Pakistan, Fred Senevirathne, who accompanied the visiting Thero, along with Minister of the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Pakistan. The Secretary to the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture, Ambassador Buddhist Heritage Promotion Imran Shauket, and other senior government officials were also present.
The Minister warmly welcomed the visiting Thero and reaffirmed the Government’s steadfast commitment to preserving, protecting, and promoting the rich Buddhist heritage in Pakistan. He underscored Pakistan’s vision to further develop its profile as a key destination for religious tourism, particularly for Buddhist pilgrims from across the world. Emphasizing the significance of this shared heritage, the Minister noted that Pakistan regards itself as a custodian of these sacred sites and bears a solemn responsibility to safeguard them for future generations.
Contributing to the discussion, the Secretary to the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture requested guidance and insights from the Maha Sangha on enhancing ongoing efforts to conserve and preserve Buddhist heritage sites and artifacts, highlighting the importance of international collaboration and spiritual leadership in these endeavors.
Ven. Pannasiri Thero expressed his deep appreciation for the initiatives undertaken by the Government of Pakistan in preserving and safeguarding its Buddhist heritage. He commended the continued cooperation extended by the authorities and acknowledged the importance of sustained engagement to further strengthen these efforts.
High Commissioner Fred Senevirathne reiterated the importance of deepening religious and cultural relations between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. He also conveyed his intention to organize an exposition of sacred relics in Sri Lanka as a meaningful step toward further enhancing bilateral cultural and spiritual ties. The Minister and the Secretary assured their fullest support and cooperation in facilitating this initiative.
